EBRSO Investigates Inmate Strangling Cell Mate

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Detectives responded to EBR Parish Prison yesterday evening to investigate an inmate strangling his cell mate.

According to reports, deputies found Tyrin Colbert (dob 3/16/98)  unresponsive in his cell at approximately 5:30 p.m. while conducting line checks. Deputies initiated life-saving measures including chest compressions until EMS transported Colbert to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Colbert was found with a section of a blanket wrapped around his neck. He was in a locked cell with another inmate, Kermitious Thomas (dob 12/6/98).

Detectives responded to investigate the incident, and were told by other inmates on the same wing that the two had an altercation over a blanket. During the altercation Thomas allegedly pulled Colbert off the top bunk onto the floor where he began strangling him until unconscious.

Thomas is charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder.

Thomas was booked by BRPD on December 29, 2015 for Unauthorized Entry of an Inhabited Dwelling and two counts Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.

Colbert was booked by BRPD on November 4, 2015 on a warrant for Sexual Battery, two counts Indecent Behavior with Juveniles and Simple Battery.

This incident is still under investigation. Colbert remains in the hospital in critical condition.
