The School Drug Task Force responded to McKinley High School located at 800 W. McKinley St., at approximately 10:30 a.m. in reference to a gun found in a pencil pouch of an 9thth grade student.
The 14 year old juvenile student was transported to the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center where he was charged with Illegal Carrying of a Weapon on School Property and violation of a weapon free zone.
According to reports, the assistant principal stated that he was advised by a teacher that a student left their pencil holder pouch in the classroom on a desk. The teacher checked the pouch and found a .25 automatic handgun that was disassembled with one live bullet in the magazine. The teacher stated that he shouted to a crowd of students that someone left their bag the teacher then picked up the bag and noticed that it was heavy upon opening the bag a small hand gun was discovered.
The teacher stated that the accused returned to the room and approached him, at which point he asked the accused, while he was holding the pouch out if it was his and the accused responded yes. The teacher then contacted an administrator who came and retrieved the student and the hand gun.
